The result triggered an "earthquake" in the developer community:A large number of heavy users posted their bills, with monthly fees soaring from the original $29 to $750 or even $3,000.——The increase is as high as 10 to 50 times. The post "Goodbye, Copilot" in the community has been forwarded thousands of times.

What has changed?

The new billing system will be officially launched on June 1. Core mechanism: 1 GitHub AI Credit = 0.01 USD, charged according to the input/output/cache token consumption of the model. the good news isCode Completions and Next Edit suggestions remain free--Retained on all paid plans. The real "stop watch" is agent sessions, cutting-edge model access, multi-step autonomous tasks and code review (Code Review).

The problem is:A long agentic session can burn through $30-40 in credits. Under the old plan, you had unlimited access to these features for only $29 per month. GitHub CPO Mario Rodriguez made no attempt to soften the message: "Copilot is not the product it was a year ago." The annual subscription plan has also been completely cancelled, and users will all switch to monthly usage billing.

Where does the developer anger come from?

On the official discussion forums of Reddit,

no safety net: Under the old plan, after running out of advanced requests, it will be downgraded to a cheaper model. Now that the points are exhausted, the advanced functions will be deactivated directly until manual purchase or cycle reset.

Microsoft cultivates usage habits and then raises prices: In the past two years, Microsoft and GitHub have encouraged developers to "use Copilot for everything" - long chats, agent mode, PR review, cutting-edge models - and now the costs of these workflows have skyrocketed.

opaque: Many developers don’t know how much they spent until the bills come out.

The end of the era of “unlimited AI use”

Copilot's billing changes are not an isolated incident.CursorSwitch to pay-as-you-go billing in June 2025.WindsurfFollow up in March 2026,ChatGPTIt's also moving in the same direction. Google's Gemini Spark persistent agent is locked behind the $100 per month AI Ultra tier. The entire industry is forming a two-track structure: a Pro base tier of about $20 + a professional user tier of about $200.

The economic logic behind it is simple:The marginal cost of AI inference will not approach zero like traditional software. Each token generation has a real GPU computing cost, and a subscription system that does not increase with usage will lose money for every heavy user. Rodriguez confirms that one long agentic session costs the company as much as a month of regular chat inquiries. For Chinese developers,GitHub CopilotPrice changes may prompt more people to switch toClaude Code (Pro subscription has unlimited agent use),Cursor(more predictable pricing model) or domestic alternatives.

Summarize

Copilot's pay-per-volume billing is not as simple as a "price increase" - it is a structural change in the business model of the entire AI developer tools industry. The era of free or dirt-cheap AI programming tools is coming to an end. For individual developers, now is the time to re-evaluate "how much is my AI-assisted programming worth?"

Want to compare more AI programming tools? access AI Dash ——Discover the best AI tools.

[6

post-331","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-ai-coding
["GET
