Plaintiffs seek maximum statutory damages per infringing work <strong>$150,000<\/strong>and an additional $25,000 for each willful removal of copyright management information <strong>$25,000<\/strong>If the court awards maximum statutory damages, total compensation could reach several billion dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specific infringing songs listed in the complaint include Marvin Gaye\u2019s \u201cAin\u2019t No Mountain High Enough,\u201d Bon Jovi\u2019s \u201cLivin\u2019 On a Prayer,\u201d Earth, Wind &amp; Fire\u2019s \u201cSeptember,\u201d Leonard Cohen\u2019s \u201cHallelujah,\u201d and Taylor Swift\u2019s \u201cPaper Rings,\u201d among other classics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accusations target founders directly: over 5 million pirated books downloaded<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike previous cases that sued only corporate entities, this lawsuit unusually names Anthropic co-founders <strong>Dario Amodei<\/strong> and <strong>Benjamin Mann<\/strong> as individual defendants. The complaint alleges Mann downloaded over <strong>5 million pirated books via BitTorrent<\/strong>while company employees additionally downloaded at least 2 million more from the \u201cPirate Library Mirror.\u201d Furthermore, the complaint accuses Anthropic of web-scraping content from lyrics sites such as MusixMatch and LyricFind\u2014sites that themselves pay record labels for licensed content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plaintiffs state outright in the complaint: \u201cThis is one of the largest and most brazen ongoing thefts in intellectual property history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Anthropic\u2019s legal troubles continue to escalate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This marks yet another major lawsuit Anthropic has faced recently. Earlier, the company settled with the publishing industry for <strong>$1.5 billion<\/strong> Multiple music rights holders\u2014including Universal Music Group, Concord, ABKCO, BMG, and Round Hill Music\u2014have also separately filed lawsuits against Anthropic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Anthropic, this creates a \u201cpincer movement\u201d: on one front, it confronts government blacklisting controversies (having just won a court ruling on August 28 declaring the Pentagon\u2019s blacklist unconstitutional), while on the other, it faces dual copyright offensives from both the publishing and music industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What this means for the AI industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The significance of this case extends far beyond Anthropic alone. Music rights holders\u2019 decision to \u201cstrike hard\u201d at this moment\u2014by directly suing founders and specific employees and detailing evidence of pirated downloads\u2014signals a comprehensive escalation in copyright holders\u2019 litigation strategy against AI companies. It shifts from abstract legal debates over whether training data constitutes fair use to precise, targeted actions focused on \u201cwho specifically, by what means, and which data were obtained.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the court ultimately rules in favor of the plaintiffs, Anthropic will not only face substantial damages but the entire AI industry\u2019s approach to training data acquisition will be reexamined.
