On September 14, alongside <strong>iOS 27<\/strong> the relaunched <strong>Siri has officially integrated Google\u2019s Gemini model<\/strong>, supporting iPhone 15 Pro and newer devices\u2014but with an unexpected prerequisite:<strong>The entire EU is excluded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does this upgrade deliver?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Siri is no longer the old voice assistant limited to checking weather or setting alarms; it is now a real-time conversational assistant powered by Gemini at its core. This simultaneous update also introduces two new features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Live Rewind<\/strong>: Double-tap the Digital Crown to replay the last 15 seconds of ambient audio transcription\u2014available on Apple Watch<\/li>\n<li><strong>Siri Recap<\/strong>: Generate daily summaries of ambient conversations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is the EU excluded?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the most noteworthy aspect of this release. Apple has rolled out its largest AI feature to all markets except the EU, citing official reasons that the Gemini-powered assistant combined with ambient transcription cannot meet compliance deadlines under the EU\u2019s AI Act and Digital Markets Act. This leaves approximately <strong>450 million EU users<\/strong>on the legacy Siri, ceding Europe\u2019s assistant market to early movers\u2014most likely Google\u2019s own Gemini App for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Apple Bet on Gemini<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A deeper signal is that Apple\u2019s own Apple Intelligence is progressing slowly; choosing Gemini publicly acknowledges \u201cusing someone else\u2019s strongest model first for speed.\u201d For Google, this is an exceptionally high-value endorsement\u2014Apple, the world\u2019s most valuable consumer brand, has entrusted its core voice interface to Gemini. Apple, in turn, gains access to the most mature real-time voice capabilities available today, avoiding further embarrassment from falling behind in its in-house large language model development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cDistribution\u201d Is Winning Over \u201cCapability\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The true signal here is that Gemini\u2019s distribution has reached unprecedented breadth: over 1 billion Android devices, Chrome, Workspace, Windows desktop\u2014and now Siri. A model ranked behind Anthropic and OpenAI on capability leaderboards achieves the largest real-world reach through channel coverage.<strong>What This Means for Users<\/strong>Gemini will very likely be present on whatever device you use in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, risks remain.
