Salesforce Launches Its First Reasoning Model, Koa: Built with Nvidia for Enterprise-Specific AI

At this week’s Dreamforce conference, Salesforce unveiled its first true reasoning model—KoaBuilt on Nvidia’s open-source weights Nemotron This enterprise-specific model, trained on synthetic data, targets sales, marketing, and customer support scenarios—and TechCrunch dubbed it “something that should scare AI labs.”

What is Koa

Koa is a reasoning model jointly post-trained by Salesforce and Nvidia. It refines the open-source Nemotron base with synthetic data to become a “business expert” fluent in sales dialogue, customer service de-escalation, and marketing copy. Jayesh Govindarajan, Executive Vice President of Salesforce AI, stated plainly:“For reasoning, we’ve historically relied on frontier model providers—no longer.”

Choosing Nemotron as the base was no coincidence. Govindarajan explained that before Nemotron, there was no U.S.-origin open-source pre-trained model with both transparent data provenance and frontier-level performance—“We had no idea what data Qwen (Alibaba’s open-source model) was trained on.” With an open-source base featuring traceable data sources, enterprises gain the confidence to conduct post-training safely.

Why enterprises will pay

  • Open source weightNo longer a closed, opaque black box—enterprises retain full control
  • No customer data touchedTraining uses entirely simulated synthetic data; no real customer information is ingested, eliminating data leakage risks
  • Fewer tokens consumedOfficially claimed to perform identical tasks using fewer tokens—directly lowering AI bills
  • On-demand routingAutomatically route traffic via the AI gateway: use Koa for simple tasks and escalate to more capable models for complex ones Claude or ChatGPT.

Anthropic and OpenAI have not been abandoned

Notably, Salesforce simultaneously announced its collaboration with Anthropic Claudeforceenabling enterprises to use Claude As an AI interface, data remains within the Salesforce ecosystem. This reflects Salesforce’s strategy of “in-house development + ecosystem coexistence,” rather than betting exclusively on a single model. For enterprise users, Koa offers an additional inference option that is business-savvy, cost-effective, and keeps data on-premises.
